Notebook Tutors is doing a new series: Featured Tutor! This will showcase just a few of our many excellent tutors and demonstrate why they are so passionate about tutoring, and why we love them!

Georgie is currently studying for her Master’s degree at UCL. At undergraduate level she studied at Queen Mary University of London where she achieved a first class honours degree and won several academic prizes. For two years during that degree she voluntarily tutored first- and second-year students. She also spent one year abroad at the University of California at Berkeley, and tutored secondary school students while there. At A-level Georgie achieved one A* and three A grades, and at GCSE she achieved 7 A* and 3 A grades.

1. Why do you like teaching?

I enjoy engaging and motivating my students, boosting their confidence in their ability and helping them achieve success. It is rewarding to see and nurture a student’s learning development. My favourite part of teaching is seeing the ‘light go on’ once a student has grasped a concept or skill that they have been struggling to understand previously.

2. What is your teaching style?

I have a supportive and positive teaching style, encouraging students to share their ideas and develop individual learning styles. I like semi-structuring lessons, ensuring teaching requirements are met, with a student-chosen topic sandwiched in between student-tailored topics, keeping lessons fun and ensuring enthusiasm levels topped up. This fosters independent learning and creativity, which I believe is vital in supporting academic and personal development within lessons and beyond.

3. Tell us your best teaching moment.

My best teaching moment so far has been the enthusiasm a student conveyed when presenting a descriptive writing piece I had set as an independent task – and the student telling me after how her confidence in writing and presenting has been boosted by tutoring activities.

4. What are your interests outside of teaching?

Outside of teaching, I enjoy experiencing the different foodscapes London has to offer – visiting a different market each week with friends, along with being an avid baker, and practising yoga.
